I get a lot of questions about safer sunscreen options. Here is a post that covers that and a few other summertime concerns we have when we’re looking for safer skincare:
Safe sunless tanner
Safe deodorant that works
Safe Sunscreen for face and body
For the face, Beautycounter makes a Tinted Moisturizer with SPF 20 called Dew Skin. This summer, I’ve been wearing it almost every day. It’s a dewy, natural look that’s perfect for the hot days you don’t want to cake on makeup. If you are the no-makeup or low-makeup type, this is a good product for you to wear year round. It can also be worn under your foundation, if you wear foundation.
For the body, too, you want non-nano zinc oxide protection, but you probably don’t want to have bright white streaks all over you. (Since your kiddos might not care about having white streaks all over their body, Badger Balm is an option. Two formulas for kiddos are Badger Balm Kids and Badger Balm Baby.) Beautycounter sunscreen has a lovely scent and a lovely finish — no white streaks. Here is a link to their SPF 30 sunscreen lotion, they also make non-aerosol sprays and sticks.
Safe Sunless Tanner
Beauty by Earth makes a sunless tanner with a great safety rating and a pile of wonderful Amazon customer reviews. The Environmental Working Group’s Skin Deep Database has rated this sunless tanner a 2, which is an excellent score for safety. (You can go to their database and check out all your skincare products to see how they rate for safety!)
Natural Deodorant that works
Schmidt’s Naturals is the only natural deodorant I’ve ever tried that actually works. Their formula is free of parabens, phthalates, and aluminum. They make several scents, but I almost always choose fragrance free when I have the option since, to my minimalist mind, fewer ingredients is always better.
If you want to go the DIY route, Wellness Mama has a recipe. I will warn you that I have found homemade deodorant difficult to nail down for my skin type. Everyone’s skin is different, and I’ve always found myself with little red rashes (irritation from too much baking soda) no matter how much I fiddle with the recipe!
No summertime skincare routine would be complete without a skin brush for exfoliating those arms and legs. If you haven’t yet added full-body exfoliation to your pre-shower routine, you need to take a minute and try it! In addition to the skin exfoliation benefits, dry skin brushing is a gently invigorating practice that increases circulation and moves lymph. For gentle exfoliation on my face, I use this Nourishing Cream Exfoliator.
What are the skincare items you can’t live without for summertime?
